We are proud to announce that our student, Kathy Liu will be attending the Genee in Antwerp, Belgium from September 18-25! The Genee International Ballet Competition is one of the most prestigious ballet competitions in the world. It attracts RAD trained dancers from around the globe. Candidates will have the opportunity to work with renowned teachers and choreographers for five days before the semi-finals. Twelve dancers will then move on to the finals to compete for medals and opportunities. The dancers will be seen by an audience, ballet school and company directors from around the world. http://www.rad.org.uk/achieve/the-genee/genee-2014-1

Kathy has been a student at Rachel’s Ballet for thirteen years. She is the first RB student to attend the Genee, and is also working to take her Solo Seal exam in the spring, another first at RB.  For the Genee, Kathy has prepared the second variation from Act 2 of Raymonda, as well as an original contemporary ballet solo choreographed by Sharon Kung. She has attended many summer intensive programs, including the Joffrey Ballet, Lines, and ABT. Kathy has also been a part of our Pre-Professional Dance Company, competing solos, ensembles, and even choreographing an ensemble last season.  She is one of our most accomplished students, and also one of our kindest. She has a perpetual smile and sunny attitude.

Kathy is a senior at Mission High School, and is currently applying to college dance programs for next year.

“I admire the teanacity of this young lady, who worked so hard to qualify for the Genee. It is a thrill for the teachers to be part of the realization of this dream”- Leigh Ann Koelsch

The Genee has launched the careers of many professional ballet dancers, including Steven McRae of the Royal Ballet, Frances Chung of San Francisco Ballet and Alex Wong of SYTYCD fame. This year 55 girls, and 4 boys from 10 countries will meet in Antwerp to be a part of the highest honors of the Royal Academy of Dance. Seven of them are from the United States (including our Kathy!) Candidates will come with a prepared classical variation, and a specially choreographed solo. They will receive coaching on these variations from Genee staff. They will also be learning a contemporary ballet solo commissioned for the Genee. The choreographer this year is Ricardo Amarante. Female candidates will learn “Between the Lines” and the males will learn “Beyond This”, both set to music by Japanese composer Sayo Kosugi.
